The more I think about the hypocrisies of Newt converting to Catholicism for the mistress he divorced his wife to be with because his wife wouldn’t accept his infidelities the dizzier I get. And that is without considering his role in the Clinton impeachment. This is weapons grade hypocrisy. I have to sit down now.
Say’s Law For Thee But Not For Me
Say’s Law For Thee But Not For Me
Mark Thoma notes a double standard in the conservative outcry over the Keystone XL decision. As he notes, when it comes to the question of whether government spending can create jobs, the usual suspects claim that it’s logically impossible: income has to be spent somewhere, so all the government can do is divert funds from other uses. But when it’s a private investment, somehow that logic no longer applies.
They also fail to connect tax cuts and tax credits to Say’s Law. The larger point is that they don’t care if the argument is true. It doesn’t have to be true for them to benefit from it.

But nobody (I hope) is going to introduce the Stop Used Bookstores Now Act purely on these grounds. The public policy question is not whether the libraries are bad for publishers, but whether libraries are beneficial… Continue reading Untitled

Deadweight loss exists any time the profit-maximizing price of a unit of something exceeds the cost of producing an extra unit. In a highly competitive market in which many sellers are offering largely undifferentiated goods, profit margins are low and deadweight loss is tiny. But the whole point of copyright is that the owner of… Continue reading Untitled

One difficulty in fighting against son-of-SOPA legislative efforts is going to be that anti-SOPA campaigning has focused very heavily on the most extreme elements of the bill and not quite aimed at the core of the underlying dubious economic and public policy arguments driving the legislation What’s Still In Play In SOPA
The Tea Party. Silent on NDAA, Silent on SOPA.
Check out the web sites for the major Tea Party umbrella groups. They had nothing to say about the NDAA and now they have nothing to say about SOPA. They are really upset about the Obama recess appointment for a head of the CFPA. That’s the big outrage story in Tea Party land. Amazing how… Continue reading The Tea Party.
