This is the core lie of right wing populism, the one that all the other lies are built on.
“our people” need help, “those people” are lazy. That’s why Trump ran on bringing back coal. Our people need help. That’s they Trump wanted a trade war with China. We need to help our people.
Poor white people in the rust belt are poor because Mexicans and China and bad trade deals. They need a person to put them first and act on their behalf to correct this injustice that others have done to them. White addiction is caused by oxycontin and must be treated. People who disagree with this are cucks/hate America/are out of touch elites/etc.
Poor people of color in urban areas are poor because they are lazy and have a bad culture, have a victim mentality. They need to learn to take care of themselves, stop claiming victim status and expecting other to fix their problems.Brown addiction is caused by baggy pants and must be solved by walls and swat teams. People who disagree with this are suffering from white guilt/being politically correct/apologizing for them.
This is the crutch they hold onto to avoid the pain of cognitive dissonance when facing this situation.
Ocasio-Cortez thinks all people need help, not just coal miners and farmers and people who think China is why they lost their job. Trump isn’t interested. He wants to help “our people” and that doesn’t include Ocasio-Cortez voters.
