Hurting our allies and helping our enemies doesn’t put America first

Trump version of Drake Meme

This is one of those tragic stories that combines so many of the moral failings of the Republican party. A fiction writer would struggle to make such an outlandish story as real as the GOP has made this debacle.

You have Trump signing a really bad deal that releases 5000 terrorists. Then you have the GOP attempting to memory hole this bad deal. And there are allies who helped us being blocked from leaving Afghanistan, even after being vetted and cleared to leave. Some are even the families of our service members who fought there. Finally, there is a foreboding of what will happen to our allies at the hand of our enemies because the GOP can not stand up to Trump.

Thousands of refugees who fled war and persecution and had gone through a sometimes yearslong vetting process to start new lives in America are now stranded at various locations worldwide. That includes more than 1,600 Afghans who assisted America’s war effort, as well as relatives of active-duty U.S. military personnel.

And…

Families of U.S. service members who live in Afghanistan are stuck in the country and blocked from relocating to the United States due to an executive order issued by President Donald Trump this week.

Trump order blocks families of US troops from leaving Afghanistan

Again, these are the families of service members and the people who risked their lives in ways the Republican party pays lips service to but nothing else.

Without involving the Afghan government, he and his Administration negotiated a deal with the Taliban that freed 5,000 Taliban fighters and allowed them to return to the battlefield,” the letter claimed.

This was Trump’s deal. That the GOP celebrated. And what happened after?

The Republican National Committee has removed a webpage from 2020 in which it praised Donald Trump for signing a “historic peace agreement with the Taliban.”

David Weigel, of The Washington Post, was the first to spot that the page had been removed with the web address redirecting to a 404 error page featuring the quip: “It looks like you’re as lost as Biden is.”

Like everything else Donny does, it went down the memory hole.

What horror awaits the people Trump is blocking? We damn well know what.

Taliban leaders insisted they would be merciful toward those who had opposed them, declaring a general amnesty for former government workers and members of the nation’s security forces. For some, they even wrote letters of guarantee that they would not seek revenge against their old adversaries.

“We are assuring the safety of all those who have worked with the United States and allied forces,” the Taliban’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said during the group’s first news conference after retaking control of the country last August.

But in the Opinion video above, we show that the Taliban’s promises were hollow, with grave import. The video, the product of a seven-month investigation by the Opinion Video team of The New York Times, reveals that nearly 500 former government officials and members of the Afghan security forces were killed or forcibly disappeared during the Taliban’s first six months in power.

The Taliban Promised Them Amnesty. Then They Executed Them

Our allies and the families of people who fought for us are going to be murdered by the people Trump freed from jail.

This it the irresistible force of immigrant hatred meeting the immovable object of GOP stupidity.
